VOLUNTEER
Volunteers are an active part of Western Lake Superior Habitat for Humanity's success: they make possible the building and repairing of homes in our area.
By volunteering with WLS Habitat you are making an active difference in your community:
Find the right volunteer opportunity for you
Construction Volunteer
We are always looking for volunteers on our work sites to think creatively, problem solve, and work with a group to help us work on our neighbors’ homes. Experienced or not, volunteering with WLS Habitat for Humanity will allow you to learn skills that will allow you to work on your own home as well as being a part of a solution to the housing crisis in the area. Many of our volunteers have worked on painting, installation, trimming, window installation, framing, and even stuccoing. Only able to volunteer for a few hours? No problem! We will work with your schedule so that we can get you out on our housing projects. Have a social group that you want to join in? No problem! We always love working with groups who are passionate about their community.
Volunteer Leaders: The Blue Hard Hats
We are looking for community leaders who are experienced with carpentry or construction who want to lead our volunteers on project sites in our Blue Hard Hat (BHH) volunteer program. Projects have included for past BHH leaders has been building a shed; replacing a deck with an elongated stutter-step; painting garages with a group of volunteers. These leaders would represent WLSHFH in a unique role as a representative of the affiliate. We will work with a Blue Hard Hat volunteer’s schedule so that they can lead at their convenience!
Office Volunteer
Office volunteers will help keep our administrative tasks running smoothly through a variety of tasks; the primary task will be assisting our office to track donor and volunteer data through a CRM so that we can coordinate with the community more efficiently. We need motivated people who have been or want to be involved with data entry, filing, preparing mailings, designing marketing materials, and writing the monthly e-newsletter. We work with everyone who has an interest in helping the office become more impactful. If you are eager to join but have a hectic schedule or physical limitations, we can work with you so that you can help improve your community.
Student volunteers
Looking to make your resume more district while also working on improving your community? There are several ways ways you can volunteer with WLSHFH: in a committee to use what you have learned in your classes; by working on a project site with a team; by running a fundraising event at your school to raise awareness and funding; or by working in the office to study our CRM and data entry. You can be a fantastic asset to this Habitat affiliate while learning new skills that will help you in your professional career.
Committee Member
Committees form part of the governance of WLS Habitat that help raise awareness of the organization; select families to help service with either Age in Place or home building; plan construction scheduling for the homes for the volunteers. Each committee works to enhance the affiliate’s organizational capacity to better serve the community. Our committees include Construction and Site Selection, Family Selection and Support, Marketing and Development, and Finance, and meet on a monthly basis (1-4 hours a month). There is an interview process, so please apply through the volunteer page.
Food Prep Volunteer
Get a group together and provide a service everyone loves: food! We are looking for food prep volunteers to either bring snacks to a build site, or host a group. This is a perfect opportunity for a congregation to get involved.

Now in its 27th year, Habitat 500 is a 6-day, 500 mile bike ride that raises funds and awareness for Habitat for Humanity. Coordinated by Habitat for Humanity of MN, the ride visits Habitat affiliates, build sites, and partner families.
This year, the ride begins and ends in Hermantown, and we would love to have a strong team riding for WLSHFH!
3-day and 1-day options are also available, each with a shorter total distance.
1-day Ride (Loops on Sunday, July 14 or Tuesday, July 16)
3-day Ride (Sunday, July 14 through Tuesday, July 16 or Wednesday, July 17 through Friday, July 19)
6-day Ride (Sunday, July 14 through Friday, July 19)
We are basing this year's Ride around three home base communities. This allows us to alternate between loop days and travel days to the next community. Each of the loop days will offer different distance options--a standard day's distance of approximately 70 miles, and a long loop that will allow riders interested in riding the full 500 miles the ability to do so in six days.
Each rider raises funds from family, friends, businesses, and church groups and designates the Habitat for Humanity affiliates they wish to support (both locally and around the world). This ride is coordinated and hosted by Habitat for Humanity of Minnesota.
We limit participation to 135 riders. Each rider is required to pay a registration fee and raise funds.
Registration Fees
$400 (Regular, 6-day Ride)
$300 (Early-bird and all 1st year riders, 6-day Ride)
$200 (3-day Ride)
$100 (1-day Ride)
Fundraising: 6-day or 3-day riders must raise a minimum of $500, and 1-day riders must raise at least $250.
